Company History
Established in 1977 in Leytonstone, East London Turnwright Limited was originally an engineering company
specialising in small items and hydraulic parts.
Ellison Hospital Equipment became a regular customer and bespoke hydraulic systems for their beds, couches
and other types of variable height equipment were designed and built. Other equipment manufacturers
also sourced hydraulic pumps and parts from our factory.
As part of our product support we became involved with servicing equipment on-site and our technicians
were often asked to service other equipment, from many manufacturers, whilst they were there. This led
on to us purchasing and stocking of all types of spares including wheels and castors.
By 1979 the company had outgrown it’s premises so a move was made to the Barking Industrial Park which
provided plenty of room for future expansion.
As our reputation grew we invested in the latest high-tech, computer controlled manufacturing techniques
to keep pace with demand. In addition customers began sending ‘obsolete’ parts to us for re-manufacture
and we are still undertaking new projects today.
In the late 1980s the move to ‘Care In The Community’ saw the rapid expansion of work undertaken in
private dwellings. The standard, heavy, hospital bed being supplied for home nursing was totally unsuitable
in the vast majority of cases and as a result the ‘Turnwright Community Bed’ was born - electrically
operated, wider, narrower, longer, shorter and heavy duty specials have also followed. The bed has received
a Design Council Award for Design Innovation.
Times have also changed with many integrated community equipment stores being established with a vast
array of equipment including Rise & Recline Chairs, Beds, Hoists, Mattresses and adaptations. This development
has also seen an exponential growth in the range of electrically operated equipment which falls under
the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Portable Appliance Testing (PAT).
This in turn places legal responsibilities on the issuers of such equipment especially if it is being
used by employed staff. Turnwright have moved with the times and embraced testing and compliance.
Further sales growth has seen the company expand into more units on the Barking Industrial Park with
the offices and stores areas being separated from the factory area.
In today’s fast paced world Turnwright Limited have proven to be an innovative and reactive company
moving with the times to provide up to date solutions.
